287 films, séries et téléfilms à son actif, des années 30 aux années 50 : c’est un record ! Des comédies, mais aussi un nombre incalculable de westerns, la plupart du temps dans des rôles de bandit teigneux, chef de gang, shérif corrompu, ou de Mexicain, sa voix rauque accentuant le côté menaçant du personnage, il a souvent une cigarette à la main
Il a joué dans ces séries B, notamment les Hopalong Cassidy, avec quasiment tous les grands héros de l’époque : Bob Steele, Rex Bell, Hoot Gibson, John Wayne, Ken Maynard etc., on le voit dans la saga épique Californie terre promise (1947).
