Le roman de Raymond Chandler avait déjà inspiré le polar ADIEU MA JOLIE en 1940. Ce film, plus proche du roman, c’est un remake de ADIEU, MA BELLE (1944) tente de restituer l’atmosphère sombre et lente des films noirs des années 40, avec voix-off et décors tout droit sortis d’une peinture de Hopper, mais souffre d’un scénario assez complexe. Mitchum reprend le rôle du détective Marlowe dans LE GRAND SOMMEIL en 1978, il était plongé l’année précédente (1974) dans les méandres de la mafia japonaise par Sydney Pollack, dans YAKUSA (1974)
